Mirena is a hormonal intrauterine contraceptive system designed to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

The device is small, made of plastic, shaped like a T, and contains the hormone levonorgestrel - the hormone is gradually released into the body, resulting in thickening of the uterine mucus, reduced sperm motility, and inhibition of egg fertilization.

Mirena is characterized by long-lasting action and, after a single insertion that takes a few minutes, provides contraception for five years.

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and does not require hospitalization. Its widespread use is also due to the long duration of action, local hormone release (which reduces systemic hormonal effects), and the easy possibility of removal if needed. Accordingly, Mirena is considered one of the most effective and comfortable long-term contraceptive methods.
