The removal of molluscum contagiosum from the skin and mucous membranes is a highly effective procedure used to eliminate viral blister-like lesions (Molluscum contagiosum).

Molluscum contagiosum is a viral infection that often causes the formation of small blisters on the skin and mucous membranes, leading to discomfort both aesthetically and physically.

The procedure is primarily used for both therapeutic and aesthetic purposes. In cases of prolonged or recurrent infection, mollusks may spread and damage nearby tissues. The aim of the procedure is not only to remove these lesions but also to prevent the spread of the associated infection.

Mollusk removal can be done using various methods, with the most common being physical and chemical techniques:

  • Physical methods involve the manual removal of lesions using tools like scalpel or forceps;
  • Chemical methods involve the application of specialized substances that degrade the tissue surrounding the mollusk lesion, leading to its removal.

During the procedure, local anesthesia is typically used to minimize discomfort for the patient.

Once the lesion is removed from the skin, the affected area usually leaves a small scab that gradually disappears over time, with new, healthy skin replacing it.

The mollusk removal procedure generally does not require prolonged rehabilitation. There may be some temporary swelling, burning, or rash, but these symptoms usually resolve within a few days.
